About Taylor Phillips

Card #159 sits in the second series and lists Phillips with the Chicago Cubs, his new club after a December 1957 trade with Milwaukee. His 1958 was his busiest: 39 games, a career-high 27 starts, a 7-10 record and a 4.76 ERA. His only major league shutout came that May 25, a 1-0 six-hitter against his old Braves teammates at County Stadium.

Taylor Phillips was a left-handed pitcher from Atlanta who reached the majors in 1956 after two years of Army baseball, during which he threw no-hitters and went 21-0 for the Fort McPherson team in 1955. Recalled from Triple-A Wichita by the Milwaukee Braves, he went 5-3 with a 2.26 earned run average, was named the club's rookie of the year by Milwaukee sportswriters and made The Sporting News all-rookie team, then slumped in 1957 as the Braves won the pennant. Traded to the Chicago Cubs that December, he had his busiest years, starting 27 games in 1958 before moving to the Philadelphia Phillies in May 1959 for Seth Morehead. He pitched 10 games for the Phillies in 1960, pitched at Triple-A for three years, and made a last appearance with the 1963 White Sox. His major league line was 16-22 with a 4.82 ERA in 147 games, with 233 strikeouts, nine complete games and one shutout. Phillips was raised near Atlanta, and his nickname, T-Bone, dates to his time with the Atlanta Crackers, where he was called T to avoid confusion with pitcher Jack Taylor and the Bone came later.
