About Bobby Adams

Adams spent 1958 as a Cubs reserve infielder, appearing in 62 games with 96 at-bats and a .281 average, used at first and third base. His #99 is a single-player card from the second series of a 494-card Topps set, sitting between Billy Hunter (#98) and Early Wynn (#100). That year Topps first put checklists on the backs of its team cards.

Bobby Adams was a right-handed infielder from Tuolumne County, California, who played 14 big-league seasons from 1946 to 1959 for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs. He broke in as Cincinnati's regular second baseman, then spent several years as a backup before becoming the regular third baseman in 1951. His best year came in 1952, when he hit .283, collected a career-high 180 hits and led the National League in games, at-bats and singles, drawing some MVP consideration. He finished with a .269 average, 37 home runs and 303 RBI in 1,281 games. On May 13, 1954, his leadoff homer against Robin Roberts was the only Cincinnati hit in an 8-1 loss. After playing, he coached the Cubs, served on their College of Coaches, and ran the Triple-A Tacoma Cubs for six seasons.
