About Bob Keegan

Keegan's 1958 was short and rough: 14 games for the Chicago White Sox, only two of them starts, a 0-2 record and a 6.07 ERA over 29.2 innings, one year after his no-hitter. His 1958 Topps #200 shows him with the White Sox in the set's third series, listed between Don Blasingame at #199 and Jim Bolger at #201.

Bob Keegan was a right-handed pitcher from Rochester, New York, who reached the majors late. A Bucknell shortstop, he served as a B-24 navigator in World War II, then spent years in the Yankees system before a 20-11 season for Syracuse in 1952 led the White Sox to buy his contract. He debuted in 1953 at age 32 and picked up the nickname Smiley; as Billy Pierce put it, it always looked like he was smiling, even when he wasn't. In 1954 he won 16 games with a 3.09 ERA and made the American League All-Star team. On August 20, 1957, he threw a no-hitter against the Washington Senators. He finished 40-36 with a 3.66 ERA in six seasons, all with Chicago, then went home to Rochester and won 18 games for the Red Wings in 1959.
