1958 Topps #162 Gil Hodges

About Gil Hodges
Gil Hodges (1924-1972) signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and made a brief debut in 1943 before serving in the Marine Corps during World War II. Converted to first base after the war, he became one of the era's finest defensive first basemen and a power-hitting mainstay of the Dodgers, an eight-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner (1957-1959). On August 31, 1950, Hodges hit four home runs in a single game. He helped Brooklyn capture its only World Series title in 1955 and won again after the move to Los Angeles in 1959, finishing with 370 home runs and 1,921 hits. After retiring he managed the "Miracle" New York Mets to a stunning championship in 1969. His number 14 is retired by both the Mets and the Dodgers, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2022.
