About Don Drysdale
Donald Scott "Big D" Drysdale (1936-1993) was born in Van Nuys, California, and debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956 at age 19. An intimidating, hard-throwing sidearmer, he pitched his entire 14-year career (1956-1969) for the Dodgers, moving west with the franchise for its first Los Angeles season in 1958. Drysdale won the Cy Young Award in 1962, going 25-9 while leading the majors in strikeouts, and was a nine-time All-Star. In 1968 he set a major league record with 58 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, including six straight shutouts, surpassing a mark set in 1913 by Walter Johnson. Teaming with Sandy Koufax, he helped Los Angeles win three World Series titles (1959, 1963, 1965). Drysdale retired with 209 wins, a 2.95 ERA, and 2,486 strikeouts, then became a longtime broadcaster. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984.
