About Jim Wilson

Wilson's 1958 Topps card, #163, shows him with the Chicago White Sox and comes from the second series, between Gil Hodges and Bob Taylor. He was 36 that summer, coming off a 15-win 1957 in which he led the American League in shutouts. He worked 28 games, 23 as a starter, and finished 9-9, and his final big-league game was an 8 2/3-inning win over Washington on September 14.

Jim Wilson was a right-handed pitcher from San Diego who pitched in the majors for 12 seasons between 1945 and 1958 with the Red Sox, Browns, Athletics, Braves, Orioles and White Sox. A line drive from Hank Greenberg fractured his skull in 1945 and cost him most of two seasons. He returned for good in 1951 after winning 24 games at Seattle in the Pacific Coast League. On June 12, 1954, he threw the first no-hitter in Milwaukee Braves history, beating the Phillies and Robin Roberts 2-0, and he was an All-Star in 1954, 1955 and 1956 for both leagues. His best season was 1957 with the White Sox, when he won 15 games and led the American League with five shutouts. He finished 86-89 with a 4.01 ERA and 692 strikeouts. Afterward he scouted, helped sign Jim Palmer, served as Milwaukee Brewers general manager and drafted Robin Yount, then directed the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau.
