1958 Topps #189 George Susce

About George Susce
Susce pitched the 1958 season split between the Red Sox and Tigers, going 4-3 with a 3.98 ERA in 29 games, ten of them starts, after a 7-3 mark in 1957. His 1958 Topps card, part of a 494-card set, is #189, from the third series, and pictures him with Boston. It arrived three years after the strong 1955 rookie season in which he won nine games for the Red Sox.
George Daniel Susce was a right-handed pitcher born in Pittsburgh who worked five seasons in the American League, 1955 to 1959, for the Red Sox and Tigers. He was the son of George C. M. Susce, a former major-league catcher and longtime coach, and was sometimes called George Susce Jr. His best year was his first. On July 20, 1955, he threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout against the Kansas City Athletics, with Vic Power getting the only hit in the first inning. His father was on the Athletics' coaching staff, and it was the first game of his son's he had seen in the majors. Susce finished 1955 at 9-7 with a 3.06 ERA and six complete games in 29 games, 15 of them starts. Over his career he went 22-17 with a 4.42 ERA in 117 games, largely as a reliever. He stayed in the Boston area after playing, living in Needham, Massachusetts, and later kept a winter home in Florida, where he died in Matlacha.
