1958 Topps #29 Ted Lepcio

About Ted Lepcio
Ted Lepcio is a Boston Red Sox second baseman on 1958 Topps card #29, from the first series of the 494-card set. In 1957 he hit .241 with nine home runs and 37 RBI in 79 games, 68 of them at second base. That followed his 1956 career highs of 15 home runs and 51 RBI, and SABR notes limited playing time in 1957 and 1958, when he hit .199.
Thaddeus Stanley Lepcio, born July 28, 1929, in Utica, New York, was a utility infielder who spent ten major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, and Minnesota Twins. The seventh and last child of Eastern European immigrants, he played amateur and semipro ball around Utica, often under assumed names, before a baseball scholarship took him to Seton Hall and coach Owen "Ownie" Carroll, who called him the best player he ever had there. The Red Sox signed him as an amateur free agent, and he broke in as one of three rookies manager Lou Boudreau started on Opening Day 1952. Lepcio could handle second base, third base, or shortstop, and his best year came in 1956, when he hit 15 home runs, nine of them in an eighteen-day stretch. He roomed with Jimmy Piersall during Piersall's difficult 1952 season and is mentioned in Piersall's memoir Fear Strikes Out. He retired after 1961 with a .245 average, 69 home runs, and 251 RBIs in 729 games, then spent 22 years at St. Johnsbury Trucking, finishing as a vice president. Seton Hall's athletics hall of fame took him in 1973 and the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He died December 11, 2019, in Dedham, Massachusetts.
