1958 Topps #155 Hector Lopez

About Hector Lopez
Card #155, from the second series, pictures Hector Lopez of the Kansas City Athletics after a career-best .294 season. In 1957 the Panamanian third baseman hit 11 home runs and strung together a 22-game hitting streak, still the Kansas City Athletics team record for the thirteen seasons the franchise played there, though the club finished seventh.
Hector Headley Lopez Swainson, born July 8, 1929, in Colon, Panama, was a third baseman and outfielder who played twelve major league seasons with the Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. The son of a pitcher, he signed out of Panama with a Quebec club in the Class C Provincial League and reached the Athletics organization from there. He became Kansas City's regular third baseman, a right-handed batter who hit to all fields with good power even as he led American League third basemen in errors. Traded to New York in May 1959, he handled all four infield and all three outfield positions over his career and settled in as the Yankees' third outfielder behind Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Nicknamed "Hector the Hit Collector" by writer George Vecsey, he batted .269 with 136 home runs and 591 RBIs, played on five straight pennant winners and two World Series champions, and later became the first Black manager of a Triple-A club, piloting the Buffalo Bisons in 1969. He died September 29, 2022, at 93.
