1958 Topps #3 Alex Kellner

About Alex Kellner
Kellner began 1958 in his fourth season with the Kansas City Athletics and finished it with the Cincinnati Redlegs, going 7-5 with a 3.35 ERA over 25 games. His 1958 Topps #3 shows him with Kansas City, in the first series, between Bob Lemon at #2 and Hank Foiles at #4.
Alex Kellner was a left-handed starter from Tucson, Arizona, who spent most of his career with the woeful Philadelphia and Kansas City Athletics. His father pitched in the Copper State League, and Alex fired four no-hitters at Amphitheatre High School. After Navy service he signed with the Athletics and debuted in 1948. In 1949 he won 20 games, made the American League All-Star team and finished second to Roy Sievers in Rookie of the Year voting, then lost 20 the next year. In 1955 he threw the first American League pitch in Kansas City. His younger brother Walt also pitched in the majors. Kellner later pitched for Cincinnati and St. Louis and finished 101-112 over twelve seasons.
