About Bob Martyn

Martyn's 1958 season was his busiest: 95 games for the Kansas City Athletics, a .261 average, two home runs and 23 RBI, with seven triples that ranked sixth in the American League. His Topps card, #39 in the first series, shows him as an Athletic and is a recognised rookie card, sitting among the set's Series One rookies alongside Roger Maris and John Roseboro. It is a plain number with no catalogued variation.

Bob Martyn was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Weiser, Idaho, who spent parts of three seasons, 1957 to 1959, with the Kansas City Athletics. A high school shortstop in Twin Falls, he became an outfielder when his coach noticed his bowlegs, and he starred at Linfield College, where he was a three-time Northwest Conference all-star and graduated cum laude with a double major in mathematics and sociology. Signed by the Yankees in 1952, he hit .298 with 48 home runs in seven minor league seasons and won MVP honors in the 1956 American Association All-Star Game with two homers. The Yankees sent him to Kansas City in the June 1957 deal that included Billy Martin, and he made his debut days later. In 154 major league games he hit .263 with three home runs and 35 RBI. He earned a master's degree in education while playing, later worked 23 years at Tektronix, and entered the Linfield College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.
