1958 Topps #69 Wally Burnette

About Wally Burnette
Burnette's 1958 Topps card, #69, sits in Series 1 (#1-88) of the 494-card set, between Daryl Spencer (#68) and Al Kaline (#70). He is pictured as a Kansas City Athletic. His season was brief: 12 games, four starts, a 1-1 record and 3.49 ERA in 28.1 innings, the last of them on June 28, following a 7-12 year in 1957.
Wallace Harper Burnette was born June 20, 1929, in Blairs, Virginia, and died February 12, 2003, in Danville, Virginia. A right-handed pitcher whose key pitch was the knuckleball, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Yankees and was traded to the Kansas City Athletics on July 11, 1956, in a deal that sent future Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda the other way. He pitched for Kansas City in each of his three big league seasons, 1956 through 1958, working as both starter and reliever. Across 68 games and 27 starts he went 14-21 with a 3.56 ERA, 122 strikeouts in 262.2 innings, five complete games, one shutout and one save. His best work came in 1956, when he won six games with a 2.89 ERA. He never reached the postseason or an All-Star team. His daughter later recalled that he thought modern salaries were ridiculous and that he played for the love of the game.
