1958 Topps #154 Harry Byrd

About Harry Byrd
Byrd's last big-league season, 1957, found him in a Detroit Tigers bullpen role after years as a starter: 37 appearances, one start, 59 innings, a 4-3 record, a 3.36 ERA and five saves. Topps pictured him with the Tigers on a single-player card, #154, in Series Two of its 494-card 1958 set (#89-176), the same series that carries Mickey Mantle at #150.
Harry Byrd was a right-handed pitcher from Darlington, South Carolina, who was born in the logging village of Mont Clare and worked logging jobs every offseason, earning sportswriters' labels of lumberjack and woodsman. He pitched in the majors from 1950 to 1957 for the Philadelphia Athletics, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers. His best year came in 1952, when he went 15-15 with a 3.31 ERA for the Athletics and was voted American League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association. He worked 237 innings in 1953 despite an 11-20 record, then moved to the Yankees in a ten-player trade and on to Baltimore in a 17-player deal. He finished 46-54 with a 4.35 ERA, and returned home to Darlington after baseball, where a stretch of South Carolina highway carries his name.
