1958 Topps #153 Les Moss

About Les Moss
Moss spent 1958 as the White Sox third catcher behind Sherm Lollar and got into only two games, one at-bat on June 22 and a walk on September 1, his final big-league appearance. Early that year he, his wife and his daughter drifted 22 hours in the Gulf Stream when their boat's motor quit. Topps #153, a series two card, pictures him with Chicago after a 1957 in which he hit .270 in 42 games.
Les Moss was a catcher from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who signed with the St. Louis Browns as a teenager and reached the majors in September 1946 at age 21. Across 13 seasons he was mostly a backup, working behind Sherm Lollar, Clint Courtney and Hal Smith for the Browns, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox. His best years came in St. Louis: 14 home runs and 46 RBI in 1948, then a .291 average with a .399 on-base percentage in 1949. Over 824 games he hit .247 with 63 home runs. After playing he stayed in the game for decades. He managed in the minors, coached for the White Sox, and filled in as their interim manager in 1968. In 1979 he was named manager of the Detroit Tigers and went 27-26 before the club brought in Sparky Anderson. He later served as pitching coach for the Houston Astros from 1983 to 1989. He died in Longwood, Florida, in 2012.
