About Tom Acker

Tom Acker's 1958 Topps #149 is a single-player Cincinnati card from the second series of a 494-card set, sitting between Billy Consolo and Mickey Mantle. That summer he pitched 38 games for the Redlegs, a career-high 10 as a starter, going 4-3 with a 4.55 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 124.2 innings. Packs sold for a nickel with six cards and a stick of gum.

Tom Acker was a right-handed pitcher from Paterson, New Jersey, who starred at Fair Lawn High School before signing with the New York Giants in 1948. Traded to the Cincinnati organization in 1951, he was drafted into the Army that October and lost the 1952 and 1953 seasons. He reached the majors with the Redlegs in 1956 and spent four seasons in Cincinnati, mostly in relief, finishing 19-13 with a 4.12 ERA and 8 saves in 153 games. One of his best years was 1957, when he went 10-5 and won both ends of a doubleheader against Pittsburgh. Sent to Kansas City after 1959, he left pro ball in 1960, then worked for a trucking company, pitched and managed in semipro ball, and spent years at the Meadowlands Racetrack. He entered the Fair Lawn Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
