1958 Topps #213 Red Wilson

About Red Wilson
Wilson's 1958 was his best year: a career-high 103 games, a .299 average and 10 steals without being caught for Detroit, and he caught Jim Bunning's no-hitter at Fenway Park on July 20. His #213 in the 1958 Topps set, a third-series card, pictures him as a Tiger with the swinging bat painted out, leaving his right arm looking cut off below the shoulder.
Robert James Wilson, known as Red for his bright auburn hair, was a Milwaukee-born catcher who played ten major league seasons between 1951 and 1960 for the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians. Before baseball he was one of the University of Wisconsin's great all-around athletes, a football captain and Big Ten Most Valuable Player who also hit .426 as a senior catcher and helped lead the Badgers to the 1950 College World Series. He signed with the White Sox that summer, was traded to Detroit in May 1954 for Matt Batts, and became the Tigers' steady receiver, often catching Frank Lary, the Yankee Killer. He finished with a .258 average in 602 games. After the Los Angeles Angels took him in the 1960 expansion draft he retired, went into banking in Madison, and was later elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
