About Johnny Groth
Groth spent 1958 as a backup outfielder in his second year back with Detroit, appearing in 88 games and hitting .281 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 146 at-bats. His 1958 Topps card is #262 in the third series of the 494-card set, and it pictures him with the Tigers.
Johnny Groth was a right-handed outfielder from Chicago who played 15 major league seasons between 1946 and 1960, eleven of them with Detroit. After a Navy stint at Great Lakes, where Bob Feller ran the baseball team, he signed with the Tigers and was billed as the next Joe DiMaggio. He hit .340 with 40 home runs for Buffalo in 1948, and in 1949 he hit .293 before a broken wrist ended his season in August. His best year was 1950, when he hit .306 with 12 home runs, 85 RBI, 173 hits and 95 runs, playing all 157 Tigers games. In December 1952 Detroit sent him to the Browns in the Virgil Trucks trade, and he then passed through the White Sox, Senators and Athletics before returning to Detroit in 1957. He retired with a .279 average and 60 home runs in 1,248 games, then scouted for the Braves and Cardinals until 1990. He died in Palm Beach in 2021.
