1958 Topps #185 Ray Boone

About Ray Boone
Topps #185 shows Boone as a Detroit Tiger, in the third series of the 494-card 1958 set, between Elvin Tappe and Jack Meyer. He opened the year at first base and was hitting .237 when the Tigers sent him and Bob Shaw to the White Sox on June 15 for Tito Francona and Bill Fischer. He finished 1958 at .242 with 13 homers and 61 RBIs.
Ray Boone, a San Diego native, signed with Cleveland in 1942 at 18, lost three seasons to Navy service, and reached the Indians in September 1948, in time to pinch-hit in their World Series win over the Boston Braves. He became the starting shortstop, but errors dogged him, and in June 1953 Cleveland sent him to Detroit. Moved to third base, he flourished, tying a then major-league record with four grand slams in 1953. He made the American League All-Star team in 1954 and 1956, homering in the 1954 game, and in 1955 tied Jackie Jensen for the league lead with 116 RBIs. Bad knees pushed him to first base in 1957. He then passed through the White Sox, Athletics, Braves and Red Sox, retiring after 1960 with a .275 average and 151 home runs. He scouted for Boston for more than three decades and signed Curt Schilling. His son Bob and grandsons Bret and Aaron also reached the majors, the first three-generation family to do so. San Diego's Hall of Champions inducted him into its Breitbard Hall of Fame in 1973.
