About Dick Williams

Dick Williams was a utility infielder/outfielder for 13 major league seasons (1951-1964), including a stint with the Kansas City Athletics in 1959-1960, finishing his playing career with 768 hits, 70 home runs, and a .260 average across five teams. His far greater impact came as a manager: he took over the Boston Red Sox in 1967 and drove the "Impossible Dream" pennant, then led the Oakland Athletics to back-to-back World Series titles in 1972 and 1973, and later guided the San Diego Padres to the 1984 World Series. Williams earned a reputation as one of the game's sharpest and toughest managers, known for turning losing franchises into winners. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in December 2007 and inducted in July 2008, choosing to wear an Oakland A's cap on his plaque. His 1959 Topps card captures him as a player in his early Kansas City years, well before his Hall of Fame managing career began.
