1959 Topps #392 Whitey Herzog

About Whitey Herzog
Whitey Herzog played eight major-league seasons (1956-1963) as an outfielder for the Senators, Athletics, Orioles, and Tigers, compiling 414 hits, 172 RBIs, and a .257 average over 634 games; his best individual season by WAR came with the Kansas City Athletics in 1959, the year this Topps card was issued. His far greater fame, though, came afterward as a Hall of Fame manager: hired to run the Kansas City Royals from 1975-79, he won 90-plus games three times, then took over the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980 and led "Whiteyball" — a speed-and-defense style built around the Cardinals' spacious ballpark — to three World Series appearances, winning it all in 1982 over the Milwaukee Brewers. Herzog was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010, honored primarily for his managerial innovations and success.
