About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

A's Big Armor puts Hank Bauer, Jerry Lumpe and Norm Siebern on one card as the bats Kansas City meant to lean on, and the quiet joke is that all three plates of that armor were stamped in the Bronx. Bauer and Siebern came west in the December 1959 trade that sent Roger Maris to the Yankees; Lumpe had arrived from the same club in May 1959. They open a 1961 season whose new owner, Charlie Finley, made a public show of cutting the A's long pipeline to New York. Siebern had led the 1960 team in home runs and runs batted in, Lumpe in hits, while Bauer managed three homers in 95 games. Series 2.

Hank Bauer was the Yankees' hard-nosed right fielder, a decorated Marine and three-time All-Star who won seven World Series rings, then managed for eight seasons and drove the 1966 Orioles to a World Series sweep of the Dodgers. Jerry Lumpe was a steady left-handed second baseman who broke in with the Yankees, blossomed into an everyday hitter after a trade to Kansas City, hit .301 for the Athletics in 1962, and made Detroit's 1964 All-Star team before retiring in 1967. A quiet, 6-foot-2 left-handed slugger, Siebern won a Gold Glove with the Yankees, was traded for Roger Maris, and made four All-Star teams as a first baseman for Kansas City and Baltimore.
