About this card

Cards #401-410 are the Baseball Thrills subset: ten event cards recalling famous feats, from Babe Ruth's 60th home run to Harvey Haddix's twelve perfect innings.

The story on this card

Card 401 opens Topps' 1961 Baseball Thrills subset, a look back rather than a current-season issue. The moment is September 30, 1927, at Yankee Stadium: with the game tied 2-2 in the eighth and Mark Koenig on third after a triple, Babe Ruth drove a Tom Zachary pitch into the right-field stands for number 60, breaking the mark of 59 he set himself in 1921. The Yankees won 4-2 in their next-to-last game of a season they had already clinched, with Ruth batting third in the Murderers' Row order ahead of Lou Gehrig; 17 of the 60 came in September alone. The record still stood when this fifth-series card reached packs; Roger Maris passed it with his 61st on the last day of 1961.
