1961 Topps #393 Batter Bafflers - Don Cardwell / Glen Hobbie
On this card: Don Cardwell, Glen Hobbie

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Topps handed Chicago Cubs right-handers Don Cardwell and Glen Hobbie the "Batter Bafflers" title, one of several 1961 combination cards that group pitchers under a nickname instead of a stat line; the same set pairs Koufax and Podres as "Dodger Southpaws" and Face and Law as "Buc Hill Aces." Card 393 is a fifth-series card; both men had reached the majors in 1957. The pairing made sense after 1960: Cardwell arrived from Philadelphia in a May trade and two days later no-hit the Cardinals 4-0 at Wrigley Field in his first start as a Cub, the first pitcher ever to manage that with a new club. Hobbie, the holdover, won 16 games and lost 20, tying for the National League lead in defeats.
Don Cardwell was a hard-throwing North Carolina right-hander who no-hit the Cardinals two days after a May 1960 trade to the Cubs, won 102 games over fourteen seasons, and pitched for the 1969 champion Mets. Glen Hobbie was a Chicago Cubs right-hander who won 16 games in both 1959 and 1960, then was traded to the Cardinals for Lew Burdette in 1964, finishing his career with 62 wins and 682 strikeouts.
