About Bobby Richardson

Card #180 reached collectors in the second series while Richardson was in the middle of the most durable year of his career. Ralph Houk had taken over as manager and batted him first or second every day; he played all 162 games, hit .261 with 173 hits, 80 runs and 49 RBI, and led the American League with 413 putouts and 136 double plays at second base. He hit .391 against Cincinnati in the World Series that October - nine hits in 23 at bats, both still five-game Series records - and afterward took the first of his five straight Gold Gloves. His rookie card is back in the 1957 set; this one is a mid-career issue.

Bobby Richardson was a second baseman who spent his entire twelve-year career with the New York Yankees, from 1955 through 1966. He signed out of Edmunds High School in Sumter, South Carolina, on the day he graduated, and broke in as a light-hitting reserve behind Billy Martin, Gil McDougald and Jerry Coleman before settling in as the regular second baseman in 1959, the year he hit .301. He teamed with shortstop Tony Kubek and third baseman Clete Boyer to form one of the sharpest infields of the era, winning five straight Gold Gloves from 1961 through 1965. A contact hitter who almost never struck out - 243 times in twelve seasons - he led the American League in at bats three times and in hits once, with 209 in 1962. He was an eight-time All-Star and played in seven World Series, batting .305 in them, and in 1960 he became the only World Series MVP ever chosen from the losing team, driving in a record twelve runs, six of them in a single game. He retired after the 1966 season, still only 31, to spend more time with his family, and later coached college baseball at South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Liberty.
