About Dan Dobbek

1961 Topps #108 is a first-series card, and his first Topps issue had come two years earlier. It lists him with the Minnesota Twins in the franchise's first year in the Twin Cities, and he had a small part in the opening act: on April 11, 1961, in the first game in Twins history, he came off the bench in the seventh inning as a defensive replacement for left fielder Jim Lemon, then was hit by a Jim Coates pitch in the ninth and stole second. The back's 1960 line is his only full season, .218 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI in 110 games for Washington.

Dan Dobbek was a left-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing outfielder from Ontonagon, Michigan, the first major leaguer to come out of that Lake Superior village. He played at Western Michigan and signed with Washington in 1955, and his first professional season was his finest: .340 with 33 doubles, 16 triples, 23 home runs and 144 runs batted in for Hobbs of the Class B Southwestern League in 1956. Two years of military service followed. He came back in 1959 to hit 23 homers for Chattanooga of the Southern Association, and Washington brought him up that September. His only full major league season was 1960, when he batted .218 with 10 home runs in 110 games, just 55 of them starts. He moved north with the franchise as a charter Minnesota Twin in 1961. A January 1962 trade sent him to Cincinnati for catcher Jerry Zimmerman, but he never played in the majors again and retired after the 1963 season with a .208 average, 15 home runs and 49 RBI in 198 games. He also played winter ball for Cienfuegos in Cuba and was part of its 1960 Caribbean Series championship team. The Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1991, and he died in Portland, Oregon, in 2023.
