About Lenny Green

Green's first summer in Minnesota, after the Senators moved to the Twin Cities and became the Twins, was the best all-around season of his career. He played 156 games in center field between Jim Lemon in left and Bob Allison in right, batted .285 in an even 600 at-bats, and led the club with 171 hits while scoring 92 runs, driving in 50 and hitting nine home runs. From May 1 through May 28 he hit safely in 24 straight games, a Twins record that stood until Ken Landreaux passed it in 1980. Card 4 belongs to the first series.

Leonard Charles Green, born January 6, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, was an outfielder who played 12 major league seasons between 1957 and 1968 for the Baltimore Orioles, the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins, the Los Angeles Angels, the Boston Red Sox, and the Detroit Tigers. A left-handed hitter and thrower listed at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, he was valued most for his speed and his glove, and he worked all three outfield spots. A St. Louis Browns scout signed him out of Detroit's Pershing High School at the end of 1952; he then spent two years in the Army, and by the time he played his first professional game in 1955 the franchise had moved and become Baltimore's. He reached the majors with the Orioles in August 1957 and was traded to Washington in May 1959 for Albie Pearson, the 1958 American League Rookie of the Year. Green broke through as an everyday center fielder with the 1960 Senators, hitting .294, and stayed in the middle of the outfield after the club became the Twins. He finished with a .267 average, 47 home runs, 253 RBI, and 78 stolen bases in 1,136 games. He died in Detroit on January 6, 2019, his 86th birthday.
