About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Number 383 is a combination card: Topps put three San Francisco pitchers on one front and gave them a nickname. The men are Mike McCormick, Billy O'Dell and Jack Sanford. "Frisco" was the era's shorthand for San Francisco, and "first liners" meant front-line starters, the arms handed the ball first. Each had cleared 200 innings for the 1960 Giants -- McCormick and O'Dell from the left side, Sanford from the right -- and all three were back on the staff in 1961. It belongs to the fifth print series.

Mike McCormick was a teenage bonus baby who led the National League in ERA in 1960, lost his fastball to a wrecked shoulder, then rebuilt himself on a screwball and won the 1967 Cy Young Award for the Giants at twenty-nine. Billy O'Dell was a Clemson-bred lefty who made two All-Star teams with Baltimore and was named most valuable player of the 1958 game, then won a career-high 19 for the pennant-winning 1962 Giants and started Game 1 of that World Series. Jack Sanford was the Phillies' 1957 National League Rookie of the Year and later the Giants' ace, winning 24 games with 16 straight decisions in 1962 and shutting out the Yankees in Game 2 of that World Series.
