About this card
Cards #401-410 are the Baseball Thrills subset: ten event cards recalling famous feats, from Babe Ruth's 60th home run to Harvey Haddix's twelve perfect innings.
The story on this card
The Baseball Thrills subset sends card #407 back to October 7, 1904, when Jack Chesbro beat the Boston Americans 3-2 at Hilltop Park for his 41st win of the season, still the modern record. Boston came into that five-game season-ending series leading New York by .001 in winning percentage, and the win pushed Clark Griffith's Highlanders into first place with four games to go. It did not hold: Boston took both ends of the Saturday doubleheader and won the pennant on the final day, when Chesbro's ninth-inning wild pitch let the deciding run score. He finished 41-12 with 48 complete games in 51 starts, riding a spitball he had picked up that season. It is numbered in the fifth series, #407.
