About this card

Cards #401-410 are the Baseball Thrills subset: ten event cards recalling famous feats, from Babe Ruth's 60th home run to Harvey Haddix's twelve perfect innings.

The story on this card

On April 17, 1953, with two out in the top of the fifth, Mickey Mantle batted right-handed against Washington southpaw Chuck Stobbs and drove a 1-and-0 pitch over the left-center wall at Griffith Stadium, past the bleachers, off a beer sign atop the 55-foot wall behind them and out of the park. No other batter is known to have cleared it. Yankees publicist Red Patterson left the press box, found the boy who had the ball, and added 105 feet to the 460-foot back wall to announce 565 feet, the blow that gave baseball the phrase tape-measure home run. Historians since have argued for something nearer 510 to 538 feet. Card 406 belongs to Topps' 1961 Baseball Thrills subset, print series 5.
