About this card
Cards #401-410 are the Baseball Thrills subset: ten event cards recalling famous feats, from Babe Ruth's 60th home run to Harvey Haddix's twelve perfect innings.
The story on this card
On May 2, 1939, Lou Gehrig told manager Joe McCarthy he was benching himself, then carried the Yankees' lineup card to home plate at Briggs Stadium in Detroit and watched Babe Dahlgren play first base in a 22-2 rout of the Tigers. The streak stopped at 2,130 straight games, begun June 1, 1925. Gehrig was hitting .143, weakened by an ailment doctors would not identify as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis until that June; he never played another major-league game, and the record stood 56 years until Cal Ripken Jr. passed it in 1995. Card 405 belongs to Topps' 1961 Baseball Thrills subset, print series 5.
