The story on this card
Card No. 404 retells the 1924 season, when Rogers Hornsby batted .424 for the St. Louis Cardinals, a mark no major leaguer has matched since. The right-handed second baseman collected 227 hits in 143 games and led the National League in average, hits, doubles, walks, total bases, on-base percentage (.507) and slugging (.696), all for a sixth-place club that finished 65-89. The league's most valuable player award still went to Brooklyn pitcher Dazzy Vance. Hornsby spent twelve seasons in St. Louis and managed the Cardinals to the 1926 World Series title as their player-manager; he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1942. The card sits in the Baseball Thrills subset in the fifth series, with Hornsby pictured on the front.
