About this card
Cards #401-410 are the Baseball Thrills subset: ten event cards recalling famous feats, from Babe Ruth's 60th home run to Harvey Haddix's twelve perfect innings.
The story on this card
On Labor Day, September 7, 1908, Walter Johnson finished one of the great weeks any pitcher ever had: his third shutout in four days, all against the New York Highlanders at Hilltop Park. Washington manager Joe Cantillon had brought only three pitchers on the trip, so the 20-year-old started again in the opener of a doubleheader and beat future Hall of Famer Jack Chesbro 4-0 on two hits and no walks, driving in a run himself. Over the three games he allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out 12 in 27 scoreless innings. This card, number 409 in the 1961 Topps set, belongs to the Baseball Thrills subset and print series 5. Walter Johnson is pictured on the front.
