The story on this card

Card 45 is the 1961 Topps League Leaders board for National League earned run average, ranking the five stingiest arms of 1960. San Francisco left-hander Mike McCormick took the title at 2.70, four hundredths ahead of St. Louis right-hander Ernie Broglio at 2.74; Broglio's 21-9 also tied Warren Spahn for the league lead in wins. Don Drysdale was third at 2.84 for Los Angeles. Two men landed on 3.00: Drysdale's teammate Stan Williams, 14-10 on the year, edged fourth place, while Bob Friend, 18-12 for the world champion Pirates, settled for fifth.

Mike McCormick was a teenage bonus baby who led the National League in ERA in 1960, lost his fastball to a wrecked shoulder, then rebuilt himself on a screwball and won the 1967 Cy Young Award for the Giants at twenty-nine. Ernie Broglio - right-hander who tied for the National League lead with 21 wins for the 1960 Cardinals, then became the pitcher St. Louis traded to the Cubs for a young Lou Brock in 1964. Don Drysdale was the Dodgers' intimidating right-hander for 14 seasons, the 1962 Cy Young winner and a three-time World Series champion who in 1968 ran off six straight shutouts and a record 58 2/3 scoreless innings. Bob Friend was the Pirates' durable right-handed workhorse of the 1950s and '60s, a four-time All-Star who won the 1955 National League ERA title for a last-place club and started twice for Pittsburgh in the 1960 World Series. "Big Daddy" Williams was a 6-foot-5 fireballer who won 109 games over 14 seasons with six teams, then built a long second career as a pitching coach who helped the Red Sox, Yankees, and Reds reach the World Series.
