The story on this card
Topps gave card #46 to the American League's 1960 earned run average race, and the four men pictured finished within four-tenths of a run of one another. Frank Baumann, a left-hander in his first season with a White Sox club defending the 1959 pennant, led the league at 2.67 while going 13-6 with seven complete games, two shutouts and four saves in relief. Jim Bunning was next at 2.79, going 11-14 for a sixth-place Detroit club with a league-best 201 strikeouts in 252 innings. Hal Brown, the veteran knuckleballer on Baltimore's second-place staff, went 12-5 with a career-low 3.06 and the league's stingiest walk rate. Art Ditmar landed on 3.06 as well, winning a career-high 15 against nine losses for the pennant-winning Yankees. It is a first-series card.
A St. Louis bonus baby who signed with Boston in 1952 for a record $86,000, Frank Baumann found his arm with the White Sox and led the American League with a 2.67 ERA in 1960. Jim Bunning was a hard-throwing right-hander who threw no-hitters in both leagues, including a 1964 perfect game for the Phillies, and later served as a US Senator from Kentucky. Art Ditmar - a finesse right-hander whose sinker carried him from a major-league-worst 22 losses in Kansas City to five seasons with the Yankees, where he shuttled between bullpen and rotation and won 47 games. Skinny Brown was a control-first right-hander whose knuckleball made him a winner in his thirties; he went 85-92 over 14 seasons for five clubs and was the veteran mentor to Baltimore's Baby Birds when they challenged the Yankee dynasty.
