1961 Topps #128 Rip Repulski

About Rip Repulski
Repulski's last big-league season, and a short one: Boston cut him loose after just 15 games, his final major league appearance coming on June 18. The Red Sox had picked him up from the Los Angeles Dodgers in May 1960 for pitcher Nelson Chittum, and he introduced himself to the American League in style, hitting a grand slam at Fenway Park off Chicago's Don Ferrarese in his first at-bat in the league. Card 128 pictures him with Boston, out of the 1961 set's second print series, with nine seasons behind him.
Eldon John Repulski, known as Rip, was an outfielder from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota who played nine major league seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox from 1953 through 1961. A right-handed hitter and fine defender at all three outfield spots, he took over as the Cardinals' regular center fielder as a rookie in 1953 and tied for fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting. He set career highs in batting average, runs, RBI and doubles in 1954, hit a personal-best 23 home runs in 1955, and made the National League All-Star team in 1956. That November the Cardinals shipped him to Philadelphia with Bobby Morgan for Del Ennis; two years later he moved on to the Dodgers. He was a reserve on the 1959 Los Angeles club that beat the Chicago White Sox in six games for the World Series title, then closed out in Boston. Repulski finished with a .269 average, 830 hits, 106 home runs and 416 RBI in 928 games. Somebody in the St. Louis farm system hung the name Rip on him, though he could never remember who; before that he answered to Al. Retired, he ran a cocktail lounge in St. Cloud, where he loved telling stories about his playing days.
