About this card

Cards #51-60 are the League Leaders subset, each card listing the 1961 leaders in one statistical category - batting, home runs, ERA, wins and strikeouts - with the American League card first and the National League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

Number 52 falls in the League Leaders run at 51-60, a low-number first-series card. The board is the 1961 National League batting race: Pittsburgh's Roberto Clemente at .351, Cincinnati's Vada Pinson at .343, the Cardinals' Ken Boyer at .329 and the Dodgers' Wally Moon at .328. It was the first of Clemente's four batting titles in the 1960s, with 1964, 1965 and 1967 still to come. Pinson made him earn it, batting .396 over his final 60 games on the way to 208 hits. Boyer and Moon finished about a point apart, .32937 to .32829. Topps names him Bob Clemente on the card, as it does all through the 1962 set.

Pittsburgh's right fielder for eighteen seasons, Roberto Clemente won four National League batting titles and twelve straight Gold Gloves, was the 1966 NL Most Valuable Player and the 1971 World Series MVP, and died flying earthquake relief in 1972. Cincinnati's graceful center fielder and Frank Robinson's running mate, Vada Pinson was a four-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner who reached 200 hits four times and closed an 18-year career with 2,757 hits and 256 home runs. Ken Boyer spent 11 seasons as the Cardinals' third baseman, a seven-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glover and 1964 National League MVP who hit a World Series grand slam; he later managed the club and is not in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Wally Moon - a Texas A&M-educated Rookie of the Year who reinvented his swing in Los Angeles to lift home runs over the Coliseum's short left-field screen, winning three World Series along the way.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
