About this card

The seven checklist cards (#22, 98, 192, 277, 367, 441, 516) list the set in 88-card blocks - 1-88, 89-176, 177-264, 265-352, 353-429, 430-506, 507-598 - that lag the real print series, which is why the high numbers are sometimes wrongly said to start at #507. Four of them exist in more than one state: #22 with a correct or an error back, #192 with and without a comma (and tinted), #441 in large or small print and #516 with white or yellow boxes.

The story on this card

Card 22 is the first of the seven checklists in the 598-card 1962 Topps set, a first-series card covering numbers 1 through 88. It wears the wood-grain border that gives the year its look and its reputation: those brown edges chip at a glance, which is why 1962 Topps is so hard to find in high grade. Collectors separate two printings that differ only on the back. One carries the run it should, 33 through 88; the other prints 121 through 176 instead, the block that belongs on the set's second checklist, card 98, covering 89 through 176. That mismatched back keeps the pair on master-set want lists.

Print variations

Two states of #22 are tracked individually: 22a - #33-88 On Back and 22b - #121-176 On Back. The difference is on the back of the card (checklist numbering).

States catalogued by the PSA master set registry; each is tracked here individually.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

What is the 1962 Topps #22 card?

It is card #22 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, Checklist 1-88. Does 1962 Topps #22 have variations?

Yes. Two states are catalogued and tracked separately: 22a - #33-88 On Back (The correct back, where the list continues with card numbers 33 through 88) and 22b - #121-176 On Back (The error back, printed with card numbers 121 through 176 instead, a run this checklist does not cover). How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
