The story on this card

Card 222 in the 1963 Topps set is the Chicago Cubs team card, part of print series 3. It reports on the prior 1962 season, a rough one: under the club's rotating College of Coaches system, with Lou Klein, El Tappe, and Charlie Metro all taking turns running the bench, the Cubs finished 59-103, ninth in the ten-team National League and 42.5 games behind the pennant-winning San Francisco Giants. Only the expansion New York Mets finished behind Chicago. Even in a last-place season the roster panel carried four future Hall of Famers - Ernie Banks, Lou Brock, Ron Santo, and Billy Williams - the core the front office was building around as the coaching-committee experiment wound down heading into 1963.
