1963 Topps #223 Eddie Fisher

About Eddie Fisher
With Hoyt Wilhelm closing games for Chicago, Fisher spent 1963 shuttling between the rotation and the bullpen: fifteen starts among 33 appearances, a 9-8 record and a 3.95 ERA over 120.2 innings for a 94-68 White Sox club that finished second to the Yankees and led the American League in team ERA. Two 1963 Topps cards carry him. Card #6, from the first series, is a League Leaders entry saluting the 1962 American League ERA leaders, placing Fisher alongside Hank Aguirre, Robin Roberts, Whitey Ford and Dean Chance. Card #223, a third-series solo issue, shows him with the White Sox. Both sit deep among the low numbers.
Eddie Gene Fisher (1936-2025) was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher, born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in southwestern Oklahoma, where he pitched Friendship High School to a 1954 state championship before starring at the University of Oklahoma. He signed with the San Francisco Giants and reached the majors on June 22, 1959. Across fifteen big-league seasons he worked for the Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. After Chicago acquired the great knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in January 1963, Fisher came under his tutelage, and manager Al Lopez reckoned that by 1965 his pupil was throwing the pitch about 85 percent of the time. Fisher became one of the era's busiest relievers, made the American League All-Star team in 1965, and won a World Series ring with the 1966 Orioles without appearing in the Series. He finished in 1973 with an 85-70 record, 81 saves, 812 strikeouts and a 3.41 ERA in 690 games, and at retirement he was the American League's all-time leader in relief appearances. He belongs to the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
