1963 Topps #66 Mike Joyce

About Mike Joyce
His rookie card, and his first Topps card of any kind: #66 sits in the first series of the 1963 set. It catches a White Sox reliever coming off a genuinely useful rookie year. After opening 1962 in the low minors, Joyce was summoned on July 2 and threw a scoreless inning in relief of Frank Baumann against the Tigers at Tiger Stadium, then stuck for the rest of the season: 25 games, all but one in relief, a 2-1 record with wins over Baltimore and Boston, a 3.32 ERA and two saves for a club that won 85 games.
Michael Lewis Joyce, born February 12, 1941 in Detroit, attended Dondero High School in Royal Oak and pitched at the University of Michigan, where future All-Star catcher Bill Freehan was a teammate and Joyce was named All-Big Ten in 1961. The Chicago White Sox signed the 6-foot-2 right-hander as an amateur free agent before the 1962 season. He spent the first half of that year in the low minors, then debuted on July 2, 1962 with a scoreless inning of relief against the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Used almost entirely out of the bullpen - one start in 31 career appearances - he went 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA, two saves, 22 walks and 16 strikeouts in 54 innings across parts of two seasons, every one of them for the White Sox. Chicago sold him to the New York Mets for cash on March 31, 1964, but he damaged his pitching shoulder that spring and never pitched in the majors again, going 0-13 with a 7.09 ERA at several levels of the Mets' system before two last minor league outings in 1965 closed out his career.
