About this card

The twenty team cards, one for every 1963 club, are the only horizontal fronts in the set. Every franchise has one, including the Houston Colt .45's, the Los Angeles Angels and the expansion Washington Senators.

The story on this card

This team card reports the Reds' 1962 season, a strong follow-up to their 1961 pennant. Under manager Fred Hutchinson, Cincinnati won 98 games against 64 losses, finishing third in the National League, three and a half games behind the champion San Francisco Giants and close behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, who edged the Giants by just a single game. The club drew close to a million fans to Crosley Field. Frank Robinson anchored the roster that season, one of several strong bats that kept the Reds in contention into September even though the pennant slipped away to the Giants and Dodgers. Card 63 is a team-card issue from the first series of the 1963 Topps set, a standard entry for its slot in the set.
