About Dick McAuliffe

The 1963 Topps #64 is a first-series card. His rookie card is the 1962 issue. It follows 1962, the year he finished a six-month Air Force stint just before spring training and then played wherever Detroit needed him. Second base became his main post, but he also logged 49 games at third and only 16 at shortstop. He appeared in 139 games, hit .263 with 20 doubles, 12 home runs and 63 runs batted in, and drew 64 walks for a .349 on-base percentage.

Richard John McAuliffe was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on November 29, 1939, and grew up in the village of Unionville. Tigers scout Lew Cassell signed him out of Farmington High School after the Class of 1957 graduated, and four minor league seasons later he reached Detroit in September 1960. A left-handed hitter, he held his hands cocked high and opened his front foot toward the pitcher, stepping back toward a conventional stance only as the ball came in. He became the Tigers' regular shortstop in 1963 and held the job through 1966, moved to second base in 1967 so Ray Oyler could take over at short, and was still there when Detroit won the 1968 World Series. Over sixteen seasons - fourteen with the Tigers, two with Boston after an October 1973 trade for outfielder Ben Oglivie - he batted .247 with 197 home runs, 697 runs batted in, 888 runs scored and 882 walks. He managed Boston's Double-A Bristol club in 1975 before a late recall ended his playing days that September. He later ran baseball schools and a coin-operated laundry repair business, and died in Farmington, Connecticut, on May 13, 2016.
