The story on this card
Card 4 opens the set's first print series with the American League home run recap from 1962: Harmon Killebrew led the league outright with 48, one short of National League leader Willie Mays, while Norm Cash was AL runner-up with 39 after his freak .361 batting title the year before. Rocky Colavito hit 37 for Detroit, Leon Wagner matched him with 37 for the Angels, Jim Gentile added 33 for Baltimore, and Roger Maris, a year removed from his record 61, hit 33 for the Yankees. The board spans five teams -- Twins, Tigers, Angels, Orioles, and Yankees -- and carries no photo of any one player.
Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award. Norm Cash, "Stormin' Norman," held down first base in Detroit for fifteen seasons, won the 1961 American League batting title at .361, made five All-Star teams and helped the Tigers win the 1968 World Series, finishing with 377 home runs. A nine-time All-Star with one of the great throwing arms of his era, Rocky Colavito tied for the 1959 American League home run crown, homered four straight times in one game that June, and led the league in RBI for Cleveland in 1965. Leon 'Daddy Wags' Wagner spent twelve big-league seasons swinging a feared left-handed bat for five clubs, highlighted by his 1962 All-Star Game MVP award and a .272 career average with 211 home runs built on power, not defense. Diamond Jim Gentile lost eight years to the Dodgers' minor leagues before Baltimore handed him first base at 26; he made both All-Star teams three straight years and hit five grand slams in 1961, an American League record. Roger Maris - the Yankees right fielder who broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record with 61 in 1961, a back-to-back American League MVP and three-time World Series champion in New York and St. Louis. He is not in Cooperstown.
