About Dan Osinski

Osinski's 1963 Topps card is his recognized rookie issue, printed after a 1962 debut season split between two clubs. Kansas City gave him his first big-league inning on April 11, got four rough outings out of him, and had him back in the minors by May before the July sale; the Los Angeles Angels then got 6-4 pitching with a 2.82 ERA, four saves and 44 strikeouts in 33 games. Card #114 is a series-2 number and lists him with the Angels, the club he opened 1963 with.

Dan Osinski (November 17, 1933 - September 13, 2013) was a right-handed relief pitcher from Chicago who signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1951, at age 17, for $4,000 - the most he could take without being classed a "bonus baby" and stuck on the big-league roster for a year instead of developing in the minors. He spent a decade down there, two of those years lost to the Army, and shared a room with Roger Maris at Keokuk, Reading and Tulsa before Kansas City took him out of the Chicago White Sox organization in the minor-league draft of November 27, 1961. Osinski debuted in the majors on April 11, 1962, at age 28, and was sold to the Los Angeles Angels that July for $35,000 and a player to be named later. A Pacific Coast League sportswriter in Portland had already tagged him "The Silencer," and the name stuck. He pitched for the Athletics, Angels, Milwaukee Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros, finishing 29-28 with a 3.34 ERA, 400 strikeouts and 18 saves in 324 games - an original "fireman" from the years when the relief specialist was becoming a fashionable idea. His last major-league outing came for Houston on April 16, 1970; the final batter he faced, Willie Mays, grounded out.
