About Jacke Davis

On December 11, 1962 the Phillies traded Davis to the Los Angeles Angels for catcher Earl Averill, and after some contract wrangling he came to terms with the Angels that February. He never played a game for them: on March 29 the Angels shipped him to San Francisco for first baseman Charlie Dees, and 1963 turned into a tour of Triple-A - Tacoma, then Buffalo in the Mets chain, then Atlanta after a July 29 deal sent him to the Cardinals for outfielder Duke Carmel. A suspended Buffalo-Atlanta game resumed in August with Davis batting for the other side, so he appeared for both clubs in the same game. This 1963 Topps #117 shows him as an Angel, comes from the second print series.

Jacke Sylvesta Davis, a right-handed outfielder from Carthage, Texas, played baseball on scholarship at Baylor University and doubled as a back on the football team that upset second-ranked Tennessee 13-7 in the January 1957 Sugar Bowl. He signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1958 for a reported $45,000 bonus, then tied for the Carolina League home run lead with 25 and was named that league's Rookie of the Year at High Point-Thomasville. He led the Eastern League with 33 homers for Williamsport in 1959, and after two seasons at Triple-A Buffalo he broke camp with the Phillies in 1962, batting .213 as a pinch hitter and reserve outfielder over 48 games. That was his only look at the majors; he moved among minor-league clubs in five organizations before quitting after the 1964 season with 117 minor-league home runs. Davis went home to coach Carthage High School and then Panola College, where he went 501-292 and was later elected to the Panola College Athletics Hall of Fame. He died in Tyler, Texas, in 2021 at 85.
