About Bob Allison

Allison's solo series-1 card #75 in the 1963 set reports his 1962 season, when a pulled rib muscle and spiked fingers slowed him early. He recovered to post matching triple-digit totals, 102 runs scored and 102 RBI, with 29 home runs and a .266 average over 149 games - the second of four straight seasons in which he reached at least 29 homers. He finished third in the American League in runs, seventh in RBI and fifth in slugging at .511.

William Robert Allison signed with the Washington Senators in January 1955 and spent his entire 13-year major league career, 1958 through 1970, with the Senators/Twins franchise, mostly in the outfield. He won the 1959 American League Rookie of the Year award after hitting 30 home runs and driving in 85, added All-Star selections in 1963 and 1964, and finished with 256 home runs, 796 RBI and a .255 average across 1,541 games. On July 18, 1962 he and teammate Harmon Killebrew became the first teammates in major league history to hit grand slams in the same inning. Sportswriters called the two 'Mr. Upstairs' and 'Mr. Downstairs' for the arc of their home runs, Killebrew's towering shots against Allison's low, hard line drives. Diagnosed after his playing days with the neurological disorder ataxia, he died in 1995 at age 60; he was later inducted into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame, and the club created the Bob Allison Award in his memory.
