1963 Topps #198 Lenny Green

About Lenny Green
Rookie Jimmie Hall, who hit 33 home runs, took center field away from Green during the 1963 season. "I knew I was in trouble," Green said later; manager Sam Mele had to keep Hall in the lineup the way he was hitting. Green still appeared in 145 games, but he came to bat only 280 times and hit .239. On May 29 in Cleveland he hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth that beat the Indians 7-6. Card 198 sits in the third series.
Leonard Charles Green, born January 6, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, was an outfielder who played 12 major league seasons between 1957 and 1968 for the Baltimore Orioles, the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins, the Los Angeles Angels, the Boston Red Sox, and the Detroit Tigers. A left-handed hitter and thrower listed at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, he was valued most for his speed and his glove, and he worked all three outfield spots. A St. Louis Browns scout signed him out of Detroit's Pershing High School at the end of 1952; he then spent two years in the Army, and by the time he played his first professional game in 1955 the franchise had moved and become Baltimore's. He reached the majors with the Orioles in August 1957 and was traded to Washington in May 1959 for Albie Pearson, the 1958 American League Rookie of the Year. Green broke through as an everyday center fielder with the 1960 Senators, hitting .294, and stayed in the middle of the outfield after the club became the Twins. He finished with a .267 average, 47 home runs, 253 RBI, and 78 stolen bases in 1,136 games. He died in Detroit on January 6, 2019, his 86th birthday.
