1963 Topps #373 Jim Campbell

About Jim Campbell
Campbell opened 1963 as Houston's first-string catcher, catching the April 9 opener against the defending National League champion San Francisco Giants and starting the next four games before one hit in that stretch dropped him to .056 and handed the job to veteran Hal Smith. His signature day came June 16 at Candlestick Park, where he became only the second National League catcher, and the first since 1946, credited with three assists in one inning. He nailed Gaylord Perry at third, cut down a runner stealing second and threw out Willie McCovey stretching for an extra base, all in a 4-3 loss. He finished at .222 with 4 home runs and 19 RBI in 55 games. This 1963 Topps card, number 373, is a series 5 issue, a recognized rookie card.
Jim Campbell was a right-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing catcher born June 24, 1937, in Palo Alto, California, and a product of Palo Alto High School. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955 and spent six seasons without reaching Double-A; the Milwaukee Braves took him in the November 1960 minor league draft and flipped him to the brand-new Houston Colt .45s for Morrie Martin on February 23, 1961. Houston parked him with the Triple-A Houston Buffs in 1961, then with the Oklahoma City 89ers, where he hit .350 in 70 games in 1962 and earned a July promotion. He debuted July 17, 1962, started 25 games behind the plate down the stretch and beat Bob Gibson with a home run that August. In two big-league seasons he played 82 games, batting .221 with 7 home runs, 25 RBI and 54 hits. Houston sold him to the Cincinnati Reds on October 9, 1963, and he finished his playing career in Triple-A through 1965. Campbell died October 17, 2024, in Los Altos, California.
