About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

This card, #528 in the high-number seventh series, paired the 18-year-old Duncan with fellow Athletics prospect Tom Reynolds on a shared Rookie Stars card, marking his Topps rookie card. Duncan had made his major league debut in May 1964, kept on Kansas City's roster all season as a bonus-rule pick despite playing in only 25 games. A defensive-minded catcher for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, and Baltimore Orioles from 1964 to 1976, later a renowned pitching coach alongside Tony La Russa for three decades with the White Sox, Athletics, and Cardinals.

1964 Topps #528 places Reynolds in the Rookie Stars subset alongside Dave Duncan, both representing the Kansas City Athletics on a shared card. It is a series 7 card, printed in the high-number run, which makes it a recognized rookie card for both players pictured. Reynolds had debuted with the Athletics the previous September and would appear in 31 games in 1964. Arizona-born outfielder who broke in with the Kansas City Athletics in 1963 and later played for the Mets, Angels and Brewers over an eight-season career.
