About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Norman spent 1964 with the Chicago Cubs organization, appearing in 8 major league games (5 starts) after Kansas City had traded him there following the 1963 season. It was a rough year on the field - he struggled with his control and mechanics in the Cubs system - but it produced this card, from the set's sixth print series. It is a recognized rookie card, shared as a multi-player Rookie Stars subset entry with fellow pitcher Sterling Slaughter. A 5-foot-8 screwball pitcher who remade himself after a shoulder injury and became a durable Big Red Machine starter, winning two World Series with Cincinnati in the mid-1970s.
1964 was Sterling Slaughter's only major league season, spent entirely with the Chicago Cubs as a right-handed pitcher who worked six starts among 20 appearances, going 2-4 with a 5.75 ERA and one complete game. This card, number 469 in the sixth print series, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue that introduces Slaughter alongside fellow pitcher Fred Norman, both shown representing the Cubs, and it is recognized as Slaughter's rookie card. Right-hander Sterling Slaughter pitched one big-league season for the 1964 Cubs, going 2-4 with a 5.75 ERA and a complete game, both of his wins coming against Milwaukee.
